Port Diverter Valves - Valves that only permit flow through one outlet port at a time.
Port Mid Position Valves - Valves that allow flow through any combination of outlet ports at the same time.
Port Zone Valves - Valves that are either open or closed to the flow.

Both 2 and 3 port valves are commonly used and the choice depends on the application, pipework layout and preference.

  • 3 port valves are suitable for providing separate heating and hot water circuits. There are two types of 3 port valves, one type only diverts the full flow of water whilst the other provides a mid position so that shared flow is possible.
  • For more than one heating zone, in addition to a hot water zone, use a separate 2 port valve for each additional zone.
  • 22mm valves are usually suitable for boilers up to around 20kW. For larger boilers and when fitting a motorized valve on a gravity hot water circuit, 28 mm or larger should be used

Auxiliary switches on valves should be wired to switch the boiler/pump off when there is no demand for heat or hot water.

 
Boiler Management - Specialist control sets that provide a wide range of functions that non of the above can offer. Often seen to be of energy saving value as well as enhancing the quality of the installation.
Diverter - Where one heating and one hot water circuit is controlled using one valve only and where only one of the circuits can be in use at any time.
Mid Position - Where one heating and one hot water circuit is controlled using one valve only and where both circuits can be in use at the same time.
Multi Zone - Where there are two or more heating and one or more hot water circuits. This system can also be used on heating only installations.
Semi Gravity - For use on pumped heating and gravity hot water installations. Both parts of the system can be in use at the same time.
Zoned - Where one heating and one hot water circuit is controlled using two zone valves. This system can be used on heating only installations.
